Let’s talk Snapchat. You know, that app where everyone thinks it’s a way for teenagers to send dick picks. Yep. That’s the one. You’ve probably been hearing more and more about it as time goes on. In fact, there may be references to it in your every day life that you don’t even realize. Photos you’ve seen on Instagram with captions and funny faces. That’s Snapchat.
There’s so much more to Snapchat than it’s old reputation as a way to send temporary sexy images. In fact, it’s completely changed. Long time big business owners are predicting it’ll be the next big thing over the course of the next two years. That means it’s time to dive in.
I’m writing this as someone who didn’t quite understand Snapchat 6 months. But then, I still don’t understand it fully. In fact, it was really difficult for me to join. Even as a 30 year old woman who is technically part of the “millennial”generation, Snapchat is beyond me sometimes. I didn’t grow up with a cell phone and texting so using Snapchat for messaging is hard for me. At the same time, I also understand that instant gratification side that Snapchat offers its users.
It took me a long time to get into Snapchat and start using it properly. In fact, my first few snaps were probably blurry photos of my feet because I didn’t even know I was sending them. I had friends show me how to use the app and even resorted to watching a You Tube tutorial or two. Okay, it was probably more than that.
My theory was that I would at least reserve my username so someone else couldn’t be me. Maybe I would look around and try a few things to see how it works so I knew for sure by not using it I wasn’t missing out.
Things didn’t turn out that way. Instead I found out what an incredibly useful tool it is for business owners. Here’s why.
Behind the Scenes
I’ve talked before about how important behind the scenes stuff is. In terms of social media, todays consumers love investing in companies who they feel they can stand behind as people. Behind the scenes content is key for letting your customers get to know you and hear what you’re really all about. It’s not about showing off your finished product if you’re a photographer, it’s about showcasing the process instead. People LOVE behind the scenes content. Snapchat is made for that kind of content. Little behind the scenes videos of you working or creating. Photos, funny things that happen in your daily life. That kind of stuff lets people in.
Your Customers Are There
I guess this is what I didn’t realize. For some reason, even though I’m a wedding photographer, I still assumed my clients were largely on Facebook and Instagram. It’s true, most of them are in one of those places. However, I just didn’t know how many people my age or a bit older were on Snapchat. Trust me, people are hearing about how awesome it is and joining. You want to be there so they can find you. It surprises me how many clients are using it.
Instagram used to be this place where you’d post little photos and tiny videos of your day. It’s since become very curated. Even I’m guilty of planning and preparing my social media in advance so I can get the most engagement from it. You can’t plan Snapchat in advance. You can’t schedule stuff ahead of time. It is 100% spontaneous and that’s the beauty of it. Those crappy dog photos with ugly filters that we all used to post on Instagram – now they have a place that’s not on my Instagram feed. Instead it’s on Snapchat, where they disappear after 24 hours and I don’t have to worry about saving them in my phone or deleting them from my Instagram later when I decide their aesthetic doesn’t match everything else. You can be completely spontaneous and show people what you’re doing in the moment.
More Snapchat Tips
Now that I’ve given you a few reasons to start using Snapchat let me give you the tools to understand how it works. Snapchat has facelifts every now and then where the buttons may change looks, but these tutorials below should help you learn the basics of how house it and how to get started!
See you there! If you already have a Snapchat account, you can take a screenshot of this beautiful yellow profile image of me, open your Snapchat and add user by “snapcode.” You then select this image you took of my snapcode with your phone, it scans it and voila, it pulls me up for you to add.
